Home Nursing
Home Nursing is a nursing specialty which involves registered nurses providing multidimensional in-home care to patients that are elderly, have a disability or are recovering from surgery. Home health nurses create care plans in consultation with the client’s doctor to achieve goals based on the client’s issues. There are many things that a home nurse can assist with including
- Personal care such as showering and toileting. This will help to maintain the patient’s hygiene levels.
- Administering medication such as pain meds, anti-nausea medication or anti-viral medication. These medications are generally prescribed with the advice of a physician.
- Wound management such as changing bandages, cleaning the wound to reduce the risk of infections, maintaining moisture to promote wound healing and maintaining a neutral pH which will reduce the risk of bacterial infection
- Ostomy care such as changing the pouch system regularly, using the right size pouch, cleaning around the stoma with water and keeping an eye out for any allergies. As people with ostomies may need to alter some of their habits, home nursing can play an important role in educating patients about living well with an ostomy bag
- IV therapy which can be used to supply fluids if the patient cannot uptake fluids by mouth, providing electrolytes which help to maintain electrolyte imbalance, providing a pathway for the uptake of water-soluble medications and providing glucose
- Patient education which is important for patients with chronic conditions such as arthritis or conditions that require lifestyle changes such as diabetes
- Urinary catheters such as the insertion and removal of a catheter and infection control which will reduce the risk of UTIs
In home nursing is flexible and can range from 1 hour per day all the way up to 24-hour care 7 days per week.
As some services such as wound care and administering medication can only be provided by a nurse. At Home Care Assistance, we have a highly trained nursing team who have a range of specialist skills such as experience in wound management, post-surgical management, and palliative care, and these staff work under the supervision of our clinical manager to provide an excellent standard of care to our clients.
Along with nursing care, the staff at Home Care Assistance can also provide personal care services which can improve the client’s quality of life including
- Help with showering and dressing
- Household chores such as cleaning, laundry and organising cupboards
- Cooking or meal delivery
- Transport to doctor’s appointments and social visits
- Having allied health staff such as a podiatrist or physiotherapist come out to your home for a home visit
